Services of Valley Emergency Medical Services
Valley Emergency Medical Service provides regional paramedic intercept service to Shelton, Derby, Ansonia, Seymour and Oxford Connecticut. This 90 square mile area is home to over 100,000 residents. With Route 8 running through the center of this area, the VEMS system responds to over 10,300 calls per year.
VEMS staff are licensed paramedics in the State of Connecticut and are certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), 12 Lead EKG, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Providers (PEPP). They also have training in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Hazardous Materials Awareness (HazMat).
Some of the VEMS paramedics are also certified Firefighters and licensed Nurses and Physician Assistants. We have assembled some of the most talented and experienced paramedics in the state and are proud of the work they do.
Paramedic Intercept Services
VEMS provides paramedic intercept services to the Connecticut communities of Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton. Our paramedics work alongside paid and volunteer EMTs in each community, all of which have transport capabilities. We bring the latest in technology and clinical care directly to the patient's side and follow their care en route to the appropriate hospital.
SERVICE AREA
The City of Ansonia’s nearly 19,000 residents live amidst the city’s rich manufacturing and industrial history compacted into 6 square miles. Nestled along the Naugatuck River, Ansonia’s leaders have helped to drive a significant growth in retail and commercial development in recent years.
VEMS serves Ansonia in cooperation with the Ansonia Rescue Medical Service (ARMS) which provides emergency transport to the city’s residents. A volunteer service formed in 1992, ARMS responds to nearly 2,500 emergency calls for service each year.
Derby
The City of Derby’s nearly 13,000 residents live in a community rich in emergency service history. The smallest city in the VEMS system, Derby is only 5 square miles and is situated at the confluence of the Naugatuck and Housatonic Rivers. Derby is also the home of Griffin Hospital, the sponsor hospital providing medical control authorization to VEMS staff.
VEMS serves the residents of Derby alongside the Storm Ambulance service which provides emergency transport to the city’s residents. A volunteer service formed in December of 1948, the Storms respond to over 1,500 emergency calls each year.
Oxford
With a population of approximately 11,000 people living on 33 square miles, Oxford is both the largest town (in geography) and smallest town (in population) that VEMS serves. Emergency call volume in Oxford has increased at over 15% per year in recent times and VEMS has increased its staffing presence in the Oxford area to meet that demand. The most rural of the towns VEMS serves, Oxford is also home to the Oxford Airport which serves a growing commercial corridor in the area of Interstate 84.
VEMS serves Oxford in cooperation with the Oxford Ambulance Association which provides emergency transport to the town’s residents. A volunteer service formed in 1954, Oxford Ambulance responds to nearly 800 emergency calls for service annually.
Shelton
With a population of nearly 40,000 people spread over 30 square miles, the City of Shelton is the most populous municipality in the VEMS service area. A town with a rich manufacturing and agricultural history, Shelton is situated along the Housatonic River, transected by Route 8, and is regarded as one of the premier economic centers in southern Connecticut.
VEMS serves the residents of Shelton alongside Echo Hose Ambulance which provides emergency transport to the city’s residents. A volunteer service formed in 1949, the organization’s volunteers and staff respond to over 4,000 emergency calls each year.
Seymour
Seymour’s 15 square miles are populated by nearly 16,000 residents. Transected by the Route 8 highway, the Town of Seymour has seen a strong resurgence in recent years and its downtown boasts one of the liveliest clusters of antique dealers in Western Connecticut.
VEMS serves the residents of Seymour in cooperation with the volunteers and staff of the Seymour Ambulance Association. Formed in 1969, Seymour Ambulance responds to approximately 1,500 emergency medical calls each year.
